Filling Up Your Summer Vacancies

It might be due to nicer weather in the forecast or just because the end of the end of the school year is approaching (whether you have kids or not?); vacation planning seems to take on a new high for everyone. Even though my husband and I prefer to plan our vacation in the fall time frame, we still like to take to the road for some adventures during summer months. As for you, the Innkeeper, it is “crunch-time” to fill spaces on the booking calendar still looming during the summer months.

Lay out the booking calendar on the table and list out dates where you see voids. Determine if there are reasons for these voids: example, does weather play a part, too much rain, very hot, not warm enough? Are most of your bookings centered around some special event(s) your area draws visitors? Are you a good stopping point on the way to a National Park, there by most of your guests are just one or two night stays? If these are reasons travelers use your Inn then it is time to stimulate their interest in your region and your establishment.

Create inviting “Packages” for weekend and week long stays with you and outline some exciting activities and opportunities to explore your area. Have a list, and perhaps discount coupons, for local restaurants, museums, parks, etc. in your area. Be prepared to suggest special entertainment that might be going on in the area. Also, point out walks or rides your guests might enjoy during their stay.

You may wish to create/design an electronic brochure of “packages” that can be edited from season to season so that advertising this “deals” is not so time consuming each time you wish to provide these options.

INNKEEPER'S TIDBIT Outdoor Ideas for the Front Yard

When you purchase any outdoor décor items for the front of your Inn it is important to use the same decorating principles that you would use inside the home. The colors you choose should co-ordinate with the color of the outside of your Inn . This also holds true for buying ornamental plants that have vibrant color leaves. Think of decorating the front yard as if you where painting a picture, you want all your outdoor décor colors to flow together.

Other ideas that you can use are decorative welcome mats for the front entrance, use stepping-stones if people have to cross a garden area so their feet don't get dirty. What you are trying to accomplish with your outdoor décor is to create a welcoming look that makes you and your visitors feel good when looking at the front of your Inn .

One note of caution here and that is buying outdoor décor without thinking about your landscaping. If you start adding outdoor décor without shaping your yard to accommodate other items then it will look more cluttered than decorative. Subtle curves work best otherwise things will start to look boxy.
